Steve Dawson & The Hooded Mergansers

About

Steve Dawson is a Nashville-based guitarist, producer, and songwriter originally from Vancouver, widely recognized for his expressive slide and fingerstyle guitar playing. Over the past two decades he has built an international reputation as a deeply musical player whose work draws from blues, folk, country, and a wide range of traditional roots styles.

Dawson’s guitar approach blends reverence for classic forms with a spirit of improvisation and exploration. Whether performing on acoustic guitar, lap steel, pedal steel, or electric guitar, his playing moves fluidly between groove, melody, and spontaneous invention. His music reflects a lifelong fascination with the language of traditional American music—country blues, gospel, folk, and early country—while allowing those influences to evolve naturally through performance.

In addition to his work as a guitarist, Dawson is an acclaimed record producer and studio owner. From his Henhouse Studio in East Nashville he has produced more than a hundred albums for artists across the Americana, folk, and roots music worlds. His productions are known for their musical authenticity and focus on capturing inspired performances from great musicians. Over the course of his career, Dawson has earned seven Juno Awards as both an artist and producer.

As a solo artist, Dawson has released numerous albums that highlight his distinctive guitar voice and adventurous musical curiosity. His recordings range from intimate acoustic explorations to richly textured band performances, always grounded in strong grooves and deep musical feel.

Live, Dawson’s performances often blur the line between composed pieces and open-ended improvisation. Drawing on decades of experience as both a bandleader and collaborator, he brings a relaxed but deeply focused musical presence to the stage.

At the Canmore Folk Festival, Dawson performs with The Hooded Mergansers, a band devoted to groove-driven instrumental music rooted in blues, folk, and vintage American traditions. Together they create performances that feel both timeless and freshly discovered in the moment.
